How it started

I was working part time in an office. The summer holidays were coming and childcare was a real problem. I did not want to spend six weeks sending my daughter here, there and everywhere just so I could work. So I left.

A little before that, a friend went on holiday and I deep cleaned her house while she was away. It had got into quite a state. When she came home she was flabbergasted. "George, you are amazing at this," she said. That planted a seed.

I started cleaning in July. Within two months I had a full round, all fitted in around school hours. And I realised something I had not expected. I was really good at it, and I loved it.

Sparkle & Press was actually an idea I had months before, in one of my "right, let us do this" moments. Sparkle for cleaning, Press for ironing. I designed the logo, the business cards, the lot. Then it sat waiting until I needed it.

How I clean

I have a quick chat, say hello, then my earbud goes in, my music goes on and off I go. I disappear into it. I look at every room from ceiling to floor and ask one question: does that need cleaning?

If the tea, coffee and sugar pots have sticky rings, I clean them before they go back. If a shower plug lifts out, I lift it out. There is no point making a worktop lovely and then putting dirty things back on it.

Customers say I am quick and thorough. I think that is the best compliment there is.

In your home

You are trusting me with your private space. I take that seriously. If money is sitting there when I arrive, it is sitting there when I leave. I do not snoop. I can tell when you want a chat and when you would rather get on with your day.

And you never need to apologise for the mess. I always joke that you do not need to clean for the cleaner. I am there to help, not to judge.

What I want you to feel

Wow. That is the first thing. It looks amazing, it smells amazing, everything is shiny. Then relief, because it is done, and your evening or your weekend is yours again.

Sparkle & Press will grow, and one day there will be more of us. But you will always know who is coming into your home, and they will always clean the way I do.
